Our approach to evidence

Evidence drives everything we do. We use evidence to inform what we do, how we do it, what we say, and how we measure our impact. As part of the What Works Network, we ensure that the evidence for what works to improve later life is better understood and more widely applied.

We define evidence in three main ways:

  • Lived experience. We start with the person, so people’s experience are considered when thinking about what needs to change and what outcomes are important, and when developing and testing solutions.
  • Practice evidence. We want to understand how things work in practice and draw on the practical experience of those who work in relevant organisations and services when developing and testing solutions.
  • Research evidence. We draw on a wide range of research evidence that employs a range of methods.

For more information, our evidence paper explains our approach to evidence in more detail.

We do this by:

  • Commissioning high-quality synthesis of existing evidence on what works, and sharing this in an accessible and useful way
  • Using evidence to help determine the areas of work that we focus on and identify gaps in what we know
  • Providing funding and support to evaluate and build the evidence for promising approaches which haven’t yet been proven to work
  • Commissioning research with people with lived experience and practitioners to understand their views and experiences

As with all our work, we are keen to work in partnership with others. We are actively developing links with:

  • Other producers of evidence
  • Others involved in synthesising and communicating evidence
  • People using, running, developing, and funding services who need to understand and apply evidence
