New homes
We want all new homes to be built to be suitable for people’s changing needs across the life course.

Through our work with stakeholders and partners we’re campaigning for all new homes to meet basic accessibility standards.
As the number of people aged 50 and over increases, so too does the proportion of the population with disability, accessibility and mobility requirements. One in five people aged 65-69 have difficulty with five or more daily activities like washing, dressing or eating.
For housing to serve the growing number of people in later life, it needs to be accessible. It also needs to support good physical and mental health, and help us to stay connected.
Building new homes to a decent standard and future-proofing housing stock means that more of us will be able to remain independent, safe and well in our homes for longer.
Our Housing Made for Everyone (HoME) coalition is calling for urgent action to set a higher regulatory baseline for accessibility of all new homes.
The government recently consulted on its long-awaited proposals to raise standards and is considering all of the responses received, so that all new homes are built to better meet the needs of current and future generations of older and disabled people. This is a critical opportunity to kick start a new age of better homes that will benefit us all. We expect to hear the results of the consultation in March 2021 and will continue to engage with key decision makers in the meantime.
