New homes
We want all new homes to be built to be suitable for people’s changing needs across the life course.

Through our work with stakeholders and partners we’re campaigning for all new homes to meet basic accessibility standards.
We all need and deserve a good home that keeps us safe and healthy. As the number of people aged 50 and over increases, so too does the proportion of the population with disability, accessibility and mobility requirements. One in five people aged 65-69 have difficulty with five or more daily activities like washing, dressing or eating.
For housing to serve the growing number of people in later life, it needs to be accessible. It also needs to support good physical and mental health, and help us to stay connected.
Building new homes to a decent standard and future-proofing housing stock means that more of us will be able to remain independent, safe and well in our homes for longer.
As co-chairs of the Housing Made for Everyone (HoME) coalition, we are calling for urgent action to tackle the acute and growing shortage of accessible and adaptable homes. set a higher regulatory baseline for accessibility of all new homes.
