Our work in Greater Manchester
We are partnering with Greater Manchester Combined Authority to ensure more people in the city region enjoy a good later life.
Our activities in Greater Manchester build on its track record and ambitions as an age-friendly city region where people of all ages contribute to and benefit from its economic and social opportunities.
In March 2016, the Centre for Ageing Better signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) to establish a five-year, strategic partnership to collaborate on a number of joint priorities.
The purpose of the partnership is to create a framework to enable GMCA to become an early adopter of best practice and to pilot innovative approaches to ageing in place. This helps generate new evidence of ‘what works’ that can be shared locally, regionally and nationally.
The partnership has initially focused on economy and work, housing and planning, and transport. Our current work together includes:
Worklessness and employment
People over the age of 50 are more likely to be out of work than younger age groups and, once unemployed, they struggle more than younger jobseekers to get back into employment.
Together we are working to shape current approaches as well as develop and test new ways of working to address worklessness and job insecurity in the city region.
Greater Manchester’s new spatial framework offers an exciting new opportunity, with thousands of new homes being built in the city region over the coming decade. It’s our shared ambition that these are the right homes, supporting people to age well.
The recent Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) report, ‘Rightsizing: Reframing the housing offer for older people’, commissioned by GMCA and funded by Ageing Better, found that a lack of suitable homes in the places people want to live means people stay in homes not suitable for them as they get older.
With our focus on 'rightsizing', and not 'downsizing', we're working with the above partners, local authorities and older residents to develop neighbourhood-based housing and ageing strategies that will underpin the delivery of these new homes.
