Health at work
We want to see people remaining in work for as long as they want and are able to, with support to manage health conditions.
We’re calling on the government and employers to introduce flexible working practices including working hours and workplace adjustments in order to help people manage their changing health needs.
As people get older, they’re more likely to have a health condition, such as musculoskeletal disorders – and many people may be managing multiple conditions simultaneously.
Poor health is the most common single reason that people leave work prematurely. A quarter of people aged 55 and over who are still in work are considering leaving because of a health condition.
Poor workplace cultures and overly bureaucratic procedures cause too many people to put off speaking to their employer about their health until a point of crisis. And yet the adjustments that people need to continue in work are often small and inexpensive – whether it’s provision of a fan or handguard, or a move to flexible hours for example.
